Group Living and Supported Apartments - PNMI
These homes provide rehabilitation and personal care services for individuals with serious and prolonged mental illness who need a highly supportive environment. A few of the programs provide temporary housing and support services for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness who are homeless and are working on a permanent housing plan. Three programs provide supported apartment living. Referrals for these programs are made through DHHS Office of Behavioral Health.
Independent Living
Shalom House offers several options for individuals who are able to live on their own in the community. We offer a variety of independent apartments throughout Cumberland County. We also provide BRAP and Shelter Plus Care rental subsidies for Cumberland and York Counties.
Community Rehabilitation Services (CRS)
- Community Rehabilitation Services (CRS) offers services on a daily basis to individuals living on their own in the community. It is available to people who meet DHHS eligibility criteria for Section 17 and are experiencing difficulty managing the impact of their mental illness and maintaining their housing.
Independent Apartments-

Housing Subsidies
Shalom House administers Continuum of Care Permanent Supportive Housing (formerly Shelter Plus Care) grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Bridging Rental Assistance Program for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) across the state of Maine. These programs provide rental assistance to individuals with very low income in the state who have severe and persistent mental illnesses and co-occurring disorders, and other disabilities.
Shalom House serves as the Central Administrative Agency (CAA) for the State of Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of Behavioral Health (OBH), providing statewide administration of both the CoC-PSHP/SPC program and the Bridging Rental Assistance Program (BRAP).
Shalom House also serves as the Local Administrative Agency (LAA) for York, Cumberland, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Knox, and Waldo Counties, providing local support and rental assistance to help eligible individuals and families live in safe and decent housing of their choice.
Smoke-free Housing
As of May 1, 2014 Shalom House will implement a Smoke Free Policy for all staffed residences and the Main Office. Smoking is prohibited within 20 feet of doors, vents, windows and entryways.
